3 Ways to Save Heat During the Cold Winter Months

Want to keep your heat from going out the window? Here are three methods that I like to use:

1. Keeping your vents clean. Make sure you are changing your furnace filter as often as directed. Additionally, keep both the intake and out vents clean with an occasional vacuum (especially if you have pets that shed hair or fur).

2. Insulating. We have a couple of drafty windows in the house and to save some of our heat from going out the window we cover them with plastic. I picked up several of these easy-to-use window insulating kits at the dollar store. You just put the tape down the sides of the window, place the plastic down and trim the edges. You can also use a blow-dryer for a more perfected look.

Additionally, we have a couple of drafty outlets on our outer walls of the house. When not in use I plug these with childproof covers to keep the cold air from coming in.

3. Adjusting your thermostat. Lowering your thermostat slightly at night will both save you money and allow for a good sleep.

Additionally, if you're gone to work all day this may be another opportunity to lower your thermostat slightly, keeping in mind any pets of course.
